Textile products cover a wide range of goods, from fabrics and clothing to home textiles, each with different considerations when reviewing conformity requirements. The Technical Regulation for Textile Products sets out the general framework for this product category in the Saudi market.
What Is the Scope of This Regulation?
This regulation addresses technical requirements for products containing 80% or more of their weight in textile fibers, such as fabrics, clothing, furnishings, carpets, and technical textiles, and covers aspects related to composition, the data shown on the product, and its technical characteristics. The detailed scope for each type of textile product is set out in the official regulation text and its guidance documents.
Does It Apply to All Textile Products?
It is not correct to assume that every product containing a textile component automatically falls under this regulation in the same way. Some textile products may overlap with other regulations depending on their use, such as products for medical or industrial use, and determining this requires reviewing the product itself.
What Do We Review to Determine Applicability?
We review the nature, composition, and intended use of the textile product, to determine whether this regulation is the appropriate framework for its case, or whether another regulation is more relevant to its type or use.
What Might the Conformity Pathway Require?
The conformity pathway may require reviewing the composition and labeling data shown on the product, and in some cases may rely on technical test reports depending on the nature of the product and the requirements applicable to it. The documents and tests actually required differ from one product to another.
The conformity assessment mechanism also differs by product category; some categories, such as textile products intended for children under 36 months and undergarments, are subject to an assessment pathway that differs from other textile products. For this reason, a single pathway cannot be assumed for all products, and requirements must be determined according to the product category and the applicable regulation.
How Does SaberVerify Help?
We review the textile product’s data, description, and composition, and clarify whether this regulation is the closest regulatory framework to its case. When needed, we coordinate with the appropriate conformity assessment body or laboratory to complete what the pathway requires.
SaberVerify is an independent platform; it is not a government entity, not a conformity assessment body, not a testing laboratory, and not an accreditation body. Official determination of the regulation’s applicability and the issuance of conformity certificates are handled through the entities authorized to do so within the SABER system.
For those importing clothing or textiles specifically, a detailed guide is available on SABER Requirements for Importing Clothing and Textile Products into Saudi Arabia, which explains how the actual route can differ depending on the product type, material, and target category.
